Family Profiles: General Assistance

Sometimes the emotional hurdles we experience through the journey in life are not as overwhelming if we receive an educational, positive and compassionate hand-up… not a hand-out…

Steve landed on The Community Outreach’s doorstep after a series of life experiences initiated a depressive and suicidal state of mind…

Steve is a transplant to the Sioux Falls community from a small town approximately 45 minutes south. A construction worker by trade, Steve was struggling to make ends meet when he was told there was available work in Sioux Falls. He was optimistic about his move, but upon arrival he quickly realized the job market for seasonal construction work was not booming. Steve’s determination and focus on finding work led him to diverse options for employment, without success. Days passed and his resources dwindled. When the seasons changed, Steve, at 22 years of age, sought refuge in a homeless shelter. He had not succeeded in finding employment. He had no friends, no contacts, and the upset of his parent’s recent divorce left him without family support options. He was pushed to the edge of self-confidence and emotional stability. While not ungrateful, Steve was highly uncomfortable in the homeless shelter. He experienced emotional anxiety and was experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The Community Outreach caseworkers visited with Steve and then turned to Avera Behavioral Health for assistance. Steve was admitted and he received the psychological services he needed. Following his treatment, he returned to Community Outreach for direction to reclaim his life. Community Outreach advocated for Steve, helped him find a local motel where he was able to regain his physical and emotional strength, and Steve has since resumed his search for employment.

Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galations 6:2
